I've been enjoying the #ColorOurCollections shares this week, and I thought I'd make a post listing all the ones I've found so far in case anyone else was interested. I may repost this in my public/academic blog, but I'm not sure yet (plus it's far easier to blog here since I don't have to switch Google logins, etc.)

NYAM Center for History roundup, includes a PDF list with links to all/most participants. See also their Pinterest board for images share only via Twitter and Instagram.

I don't normally check my spam folder on Gmail very often. I was amused at how many hacker-scam-attempts I had though, especially considering that my WoW account isn't on Google Mail ;) Moused over a few of the links (from work) to see the god-awful fake links, and then thanked the lord I have an authenticator. Also amused to see one which appears to be for Aion, which I've never ever played! :P

Seing the fresco in context and then the appauling condition of it after it has been wrenched from the walls makes me feel almost physically sick!

I've been reading this on the New Scientist website, and the comments made me utterly boggle!

http://www.newscientist.com/special/blueprint-for-a-better-world

Comment number one is from a conspiracy theorist. A semi-intelligent one, but a numpty nonetheless. As he admits later in the comments, all his information comes from one source, which is in itself funded by non-partisan research... >.< The thing that boggles me though, is that someone who is so clearly not an educated reader* is reading such a site. And that there is more than one out there.

Agreeing or disagreeing is all part of academia and science in particular, but 'Mark's comments belie any academic relation. I find it very puzzling as to why he is reading the New Scientist at all!

* Note, not saying he isn't educated, just that he has not been taught about reading and evaluating sources, etc.

Neanderthals 'may have been killed off by modern humans'

Neanderthals may have been actively killed off by modern humans, scientists believe, after a skeleton buried in an Iraqi cave was found to have a man-made spear wound.

My questions/observations on this:
1. We know who was likely to have made the weapon, but not who posessed it at the time it was thrown.
2. At what distance was the projectile thrown - i.e. accident or murder.
3. Could this be evidence of Neanderthal hominids trading and using Homo Sapiens' tools?

I finally made it to 80 on my druid, and stayed a tree all the way cos I'm stubborn... Now to save for dual spec (restokin?) and epic flight form (Still going to do the quest though!)

Ding shot! )

Now, I need some advice on what to do for him - c&c on Spec appreciated too - I keep forgetting where I was when they reset my talents!! :P He has some bits in the bank, that may be better for him (e.g. a ZA mace plus offhand)
Ugh, druids have too many stats :P Spirit, Spell power, Mp5 and Int - which prioritises. What caps am I aiming at? What does what? Erg. He's my original character that had only limped to 35 by TBC after a year or so, so I want to 'do good' by him now :)

(I like hunter agility agility agility, oh crit and AP)

He's a herbalist/alchemist, if that helps

Someone evil in my guild decided I could heal heroic Gundrak yesterday - with just a bear tank and two hunters. Needless to say they died :P

Now, Paladin, mage or lock? :) Pally is 67 so probably her, but depends on my crafting needs since my warlock is my enchanter/scribe and needs to get to 60ish to get the next level of training...

Also, to be brave and gquit my hunter to a guild with progression and the rest of my friends - can't take much more wiping at Maexxna on Naxx10 cos people don't take it seriously enough :P They're lovely people, so Uli will stay there, but I need to do more than dailies!

I leave you with a funny throw-back glitch from coming out of a bg into Icecrown... The new bg queueing system is amusing now - I've ended up all over Northrend yesterday even though I was mostly entering from the same spot in Icecrown as I was doing the Corprethar bit of the Tournament dailies ;)

Alexithymia (pronounced /əˌlɛksəˈθaɪmiə/) from the Greek words λεξις and θυμος (literally "without words for emotions") is a term coined by Peter Sifneos in 1973[1][2] to describe a state of deficiency in understanding, processing, or describing emotions.

Classification

Alexithymia is considered to be a personality trait that places individuals at risk for other medical and psychiatric disorders while reducing the likelihood that these individuals will respond to conventional treatments for the other conditions.[3] Alexithymia is not classified as a mental disorder in the DSM IV. It is a personality trait that varies in severity from person to person. A person's alexithymia score can be measured with questionnaires such as the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire (BVAQ)[4] or the Observer Alexithymia Scale (OAS).[3]
Alexithymia is defined by:[5]
  1. difficulty identifying feelings and distinguishing between feelings and the bodily sensations of emotional arousal
  2. difficulty describing feelings to other people
  3. constricted imaginal processes, as evidenced by a paucity of fantasies
  4. a stimulus-bound, externally oriented cognitive style.
In studies of the general population the degree of alexithymia was found to be influenced by age, but not by gender; the rates of alexithymia in healthy controls have been found at 8.3% (2 of 24 persons) 4.7% (2 of 43), 8.9% (16 of 179), and 7% (4 of 56). Thus, several studies have reported that the prevalence rate of alexithymia is less than 10% in healthy controls.[6] A less common finding suggests that there may be a higher prevalence of alexithymia amongst males than females, which may be accounted for by difficulties they have with 'describing feelings', but not by a difficulty in 'identifying feelings' in which males and females show similar abilities.[7]
The alexithymia construct is strongly inversely related to the concepts of psychological mindedness[8] and emotional intelligence[9][10] and M. Bagby and G. Taylor state that there is "strong empirical support for alexithymia being a stable personality trait rather than just a consequence of psychological distress".[11] Other opinions differ and can show evidence that it may be state-dependent.[12]
Bagby and Taylor also suggest that there may be two kinds of alexithymia, 'primary alexithymia' which is an enduring psychological trait which does not alter over time, and 'secondary alexithymia' which is state dependent and disappears after the evoking stressful situation has changed. These two manifestations of alexithymia are otherwise called 'trait' or 'state' alexithymia.[13]

V&A to begin work on £30m medieval and Renaissance galleries project
The Victoria and Albert Museum is to put its entire collection of medieval and Renaissance art into one continuous display for the first time, thanks to a £30 million project to improve its galleries.

By Stephen Adams, Arts Correspondent
Last Updated: 6:01PM GMT 12 Nov 2008

One of the 10 new galleries will feature translucent onyx window screens, so the light falling on the religious artefacts shown will be just like that in medieval churches.

The galleries project is the biggest at the museum since 2001, when it launched a £31 million initiative to transform the British Galleries.

Over the next 12 months builders will get to work putting the plans by architects MUMA into practice.

The idea has been to utilise dead space on the South Kensington site and illuminate the vast collection with natural light where possible.

More than 1,800 objects, covering the period from 300 to 1,600, will be re-displayed.

Highlights from across the ages will include the Symmachi Panel, described by the V&A as "one of the finest surviving ivories from the Late Antique Period in Rome" dating from around 400AD; to "the largest and most splendid of the enamel caskets dedicated to St Thomas Becket", dating from about 1180; to the Boar and Bear Hunt tapestry, one of the only "great hunting tapestries to have survived from the 15th century."

There will also be an entire gallery dedicated to the work of the 15th century Italian sculptor, Donatello.

The Heritage Lottery Fund provided £9.75 million funding, while private donors funded much of the remainder.

Mark Jones, director of the V&A, said: "We hope that the new displays, featuring some of the most beautiful and historic objects from our collections, will inspire all our visitors."

Copy this sentence into your livejournal if you're in a heterosexual marriage/relationship (or if you think you might be someday), and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.
