VICTORIAN MOURNING CLOTHING
Mourning is the expression of grief for the loss of a loved one or friend. All cultures mourn in different ways and many of them use white or other colours to express grief. In America and Western Europe during the 19
th century mourning became an established and highly structured social ritual. Rules dictated that black be the colour of full mourning, and the strict etiquette outlining the manner and length of mourning led many people in middle and upper-class families to consult household manuals or etiquette books to ensure that the rules were followed closely. The impressions and approval of others governed individual behaviour, and those that ignored proper etiquette faced social ostracism. Rules for the working class were less strict; however, out of respect for the dead, individuals still mourned and usually tried to emulate the refined styles of the upper classes.
